Thrissur: Although three years have passed since the successful trial run of the Roll On-Roll Off (RORO) train service, the railways have not yet approved the implementation of the project in Kerala.
RORO will facilitate the swift transport of goods lorries across the state.
The trial run was conducted from Surathkal in southern Karnataka to Kozhikode in August 2020. Even this happened two years after the announcement of the project. Another trial run was also carried out in the Kozhikode - Ernakulam route.
After the trial runs, an expert committee submitted a report in favour of setting up RORO services in the state. Initially, Kannur South Station, Kozhikode West Hill, Ernakulam, and Kottayam railway stations were considered for the service.
Further, an agreement for the immediate construction of a height gauge, weight bridge, and ramp facilities as part of the project implementation. However, the project is still in limbo.
