Thiruvananthapuram: Police have arrested the husband of a 26-year-old woman who was found hanging at her rented home in Attukal, Thiruvananthapuram, after her family alleged that she had been subjected to domestic abuse.
The accused, Athul, was initially taken into custody by Fort Police following the woman's death. His arrest has now been formally recorded on a charge of abetment of suicide.
The woman, Aarathi, a native of Varkala, was found hanging at the rented house in Chiramukku, Attukal, on Friday evening.
She was the daughter of Baiju and Jinu, residents of Vadasserikonam in Varkala.
Family alleges repeated physical abuse
According to her family, Aarathi married Athul, a native of Bharathannoor in Kallara, in December 2024. The couple had been living in the rented house for about six months.
Her relatives alleged that Athul had repeatedly assaulted her after their marriage for various reasons. They claimed he frequently consumed alcohol and physically abused her over trivial issues, including disputes related to money and gold.
The family also alleged that Aarathi had sustained visible injuries and had sent photographs of the marks on her body to her mother before her death.
Police are continuing their investigation into the case
