Thrissur: As the majestic Thrissur Pooram approaches, one of the most anticipated questions is, will Thechikottukavu Ramachandran, the towering icon among elephants, participate in this year’s Pooram celebrations? Unfortunately, the chances are low.
Unlike the previous two years, when Ramachandran was paraded on the main day of Pooram, this year he is unlikely to make an appearance alongside the Neythalakavilamma deity. Sources confirm that the renowned elephant will not be the one to open the southern gate of the Vadakkumnathan Temple, a ritual marking the ceremonial start of the Pooram path. Instead, Ernakulam Sivakumar has almost been finalised for this prestigious role.
Historically, Ramachandran used to participate only in the Pooram Vilambaram, which is an announcement ceremony held on the eve of the main Pooram. For five consecutive years, he had the honour of opening the southern gate of the Vadakkumnathan Temple, accompanying Neithala Kavilamma into the temple premises. In recent years, this responsibility had shifted to Ernakulam Sivakumar, with Ramachandran returning for the main day event instead. However, that will not be the case this time.
It was Ramachandran’s majestic presence that made the opening of the southern gate such a highly anticipated and widely celebrated event. His participation drew large crowds and elevated the ritual's popularity, comparable even to the famed southward procession (Thekkottirakkam).
Even during his recent Pooram processions with Neithala Kavilamma, Ramachandran managed to attract massive crowds. His presence turned the procession spellbound, with devotees overwhelmed to witness the legendary elephant.
Despite being a beloved figure among Pooram admirers, including Ramachandran in the Pooram festivities has become highly difficult. A number of limitations need to be overcome in order to make him take part in the procession. This year, he is being excluded due to these regulatory issues as well as logistical issues like delays brought on by the large crowd of fans.
It would be too soon, though, to confirm his absence. There is still a possibility that Ramachandran might participate if another temple group expresses willingness to include him in their contingent. Pooram lovers remain hopeful for his arrival for the grand ceremony.
