Kozhikode: Traffic restrictions will continue on Wednesday following the landslide at Thamarassery Ghat Pass, which has blocked the road. Traffic between Kozhikode and Wayanad is currently being rerouted entirely through Kuttyadi Pass.

Due to traffic restrictions imposed on Tuesday night, vehicles were diverted, resulting in hour-long traffic congestion at Kuttyadi Pass until about 4 am. The gridlock eased only after heavy vehicles were made to halt at Kuttiyadi and Niravilpuzha in Wayanad.

At present, all vehicles, including KSRTC buses travelling to Karnataka and Wayanad, are using the Kuttyadi Ghat Road. Intermittent traffic delays continue to be reported along this alternate route.

The landslide occurred around 7 pm on Tuesday, causing widespread panic. Massive rocks, soil and trees collapsed near the viewpoint area of the Thamarassery Pass. The debris fell from the rock-filled left side of the road, burying a large section of the National Highway.

With boulders, mud and trees falling from several metres above, the landslide completely blocked traffic in both directions — even pedestrian movement became impossible. Authorities then sealed off the pass and fully restricted traffic.

The road will only be reopened after the removal of the debris and a thorough safety inspection is completed on Wednesday.
