Kozhikode: A major traffic jam occurred at the sixth hairpin bend of Thamarassery Churam after a goods lorry broke down. Although the faulty lorry was removed, the traffic congestion continues.
Earlier in the day, a tanker lorry broke down between the seventh and eighth hairpin bends, causing a prolonged traffic disruption. The tanker was eventually removed using a crane, but shortly after, another lorry got stuck in the churam.
Kozhikode District Collector had imposed restrictions on heavy vehicles passing through the churam on holidays. These restrictions apply on public holidays, including Saturdays, Sundays, and Fridays preceding the second Saturday. The restricted timings are from 3 pm to 9 pm, and the regulation has been in place since October.
According to the restriction, the movement of tippers with more than six wheels, good vehicles with more than ten wheels, multi-axle vehicles, and trucks will be totally regulated in the area on the above-mentioned days.
However, there is no relief for traffic congestion in the churam, even on holidays. Despite the restrictions, large vehicles continue to pass through the churam, worsening the traffic situation.
