Kollam: In order to overcome the severe financial crisis due to COVID-19, the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) has decided to sell all the extra lamps and traditional brass utensils in the temples under the board. The auction procedures are progressing.
The Devaswom board expects to collect a huge sum of money by selling tonnes of these lamps and utensils. There are plenty of lamps and utensils in Ettumanur, Malayalappuzha, Chettikulangara and Valliyangavu temples. Ensuring the security and maintenance of these lamps has become a big headache for the board.
The board has started collecting these valuables from all the 1248 temples under it in the presence of Deputy Devaswom Commissioner and Devaswom Vigilance Officers. After gathering in the sub group headquarters, this will be cross checked with the details in registers.
Board has instructed against taking lamps and vessels that are regularly used during occasions such as temple festivals. However, certain temple advisory committee members have stood up against taking away the valuables which were donated by devotees. Devaswom board responded that these actions have nothing to do with temple advisory committees.
Devaswom board tried to proceed with a similar action in 2012. However, they had to halt it following the protest from the temple advisory committees.
"Devaswom board is seeking all possible ways to overcome the financial crisis. There are unused lamps in almost all the temples. The board is trying to use the assets for raising fund instead of letting them remain unattended," said N Vasu, the president Travancore Devaswom Board.
