Thrissur: A dispute has surfaced at Government Medical College Hospital here over purchase of orthopedic implants required for surgery in the Orthopedic Department. The surgery that was scheduled had to be postponed as the implants suggested by the doctor was not bought by the patient. The surgery was to be performed on the left hand of Palakkad native Chandrashekharan.

Chandrashekharan was admitted to the Medical College Hospital around two weeks back after suffering injuries from a fall. The doctor instructed the patient to buy the implant for the surgery that was scheduled on Tuesday. Chandrashekharan filed a complaint with the hospital superintendent saying the doctor refused to perform his surgery and that it was delayed over the matter of the implant. The complainant said that the doctor instructed him to buy the implant from another place and not from the hospital’s subsidised medical shop.

The superintendent and other authorities replied to the complainant saying that the matter will be discussed with senior doctors of the department and resolved amicably. The dispute happened in Unit 3 of the Orthopedic Department. All other doctors from the department perform surgeries using implants brought from the subsidised medical shop.
