Kozhikode: 'I have to change nearly 8 to 12 sanitary pads each day, I have bowel movements 4-5 times daily. My stomach is full of scars. My vagina is sliced like meat', these words of Anannyah Kumari Alex about her incessant troubles after undergoing sex reassignment surgery speak a lot. The shocking facts have come out after Anannyah was found hanging in her flat on Tuesday. Anannyah had shared with her friends the painful ordeals that she was going through. Before her death, Anannyah opened up about her health issues post-surgery in an exclusive interview with Mathrubhumi.com
Excerpts from the interview:
Dr. Arjun Asokan performed my surgery. He is a plastic surgeon at Renai Medicity. His wife, Dr. Suja Sukumar works as the endocrinologist at the same hospital. She is in charge of the hormone treatments and hormone therapy associated with the surgery. My surgery was on June 14, 2020. On the same date of my surgery, a Kottayam native Bhadra Amal, a dance teacher was also in the same operation theatre. Two surgeries were going on at the same time and she was taken for the same surgery. The procedure performed on me is called Colon Vaginoplasty. It is a procedure followed for making the vagina by detaching a section of the colon.
On the 6th day after the surgery, I was discharged from the hospital. The bill was found to be much more than the estimated amount. The amount came to about Rs 2.55 lakhs. I suffered nausea and other health issues following the surgery. So, I fell severely ill within 4 hours after reaching home. Hence, I got admitted to the hospital again on the same day.
I was discharged from Renai Medicity on July 2. During the hospital days, I couldn't eat or drink anything and was intubated. The scanning report confirmed that mistakes in the surgery created gas trouble in six parts inside the colon. Without seeking my permission, they took me for another surgery and slashed my body here and there.
I returned home on July 3. It's been a year and a month, but even now my vagina looks like a dismembered body part. It is very disfigured and does not resemble a normal vagina in any way. During sex reassignment surgery, it is possible to create a proper vagina. I decided to undergo the surgery after many opined that Dr Arjun is an expert on it. Following the surgery, I have to use 8-12 napkins per day. I am not able to urinate properly and have poor bladder control. I consulted the doctor, but neither he nor the hospital Public Relations department responded well.
One day, I was very ill and had to go to the hospital again. I found major irregularities in the hospital bill. I filed a complaint with the police regarding the same. Transmen who underwent breast removal surgery have highly disfigured chests with scars. 98 percent of people who undergo the surgery face such issues. But they are afraid to open up about it.
My vagina looks like chopped meat. Strict action should be taken against the doctor. He told me that he will perform the re-surgery after studying about it. But how should I dare to undergo another surgery? I have serious bowel trouble due to intestinal problems and scars all across my body.
Unfortunately, such an issue has happened in Kerala which is said to be a model and much more progressive than other states in the matter of the transgender community. So, such issues should be revealed. Though I talked to the Health Minister, she ignored me saying the formal dialogues like will look into it and will discuss with doctors. If KK Shailaja was the health minister, she would have taken immediate action,” Anannyah said with disgust.
Hospital authority rules out medical negligence
Renai Medicitiy authority has dismissed the alleged medical negligence in Anannyah’s surgery. In a press release, the private hospital authority claimed that they took Anannyah for the surgery after completing all procedures including counselling.
