In a series of events which followed the controversial statement made by Kalamandalam Sathyabhama on a Mohiniyattam dancer, inferred to be R L V Ramakrishnan, many renowned personalities in the political and cultural spheres in Kerala have come forward in support of the insulted artist. Even though Sathyabhama did not mention his name in her controversial statement, Ramakrishnan's response took the controversy to the limelight. Sathyabhama also came forward saying that she does not regret making the statements.
Higher Education Minister of Kerala, Dr R Bindhu expresses her contempt towards the statement through her facebook post. “The slurs leveled by a woman who harbors the decaying remnants of caste discrimination and colourism against the creative genius of R L V Ramakrishnan are highly condemnable. Ramakrishnan is an artist who changed the history of Mohiniyattam… You can claim to be better than anyone else in the field. Greetings…”
“The incident shows where our society stands now… The casteist remarks on famous Mohiniyattam dancer R L V Ramakrishnan, passed by Kalamandalam Sathyabhama… shows how casteist and colourist segregation stands strong and shameless in the field of art in Kerala… In this context, the art world is obligated to stand with Ramakrishnan," reads renowned author K Satchianandan's facebook post.
Celebrated Mohiniyattam dancer Methil Devika also expressed her disapproval towards Sathyabhama's statements. “These remarks are disgusting and shout discrimination and ignorance on many levels. Not only are the statements to be denounced, but we must also condemn those who have enabled such attitudes to hold power within institutions. I would see it as directed to not just one person but to a collective. Art is a unifier and relentless efforts of artistes like R L V Ramakrishnan have helped liberate the artform of Mohiniyattam from the shackles of divisiveness. Discrimination stifles talent, perpetuates inequality, and tarnishes the beauty and richness of our cultural heritage. We must stand firmly against any form of prejudice and work towards creating an environment where everyone, regardless of their gender, color, caste, body or age can fully participate and contribute to the arts without fear of discrimination”, Devika said.
