Thiruvananthapuram: Dr EA Ruwais, who was arrested in connection with the suicide of a young woman doctor, was sent to judicial custody for two weeks by Vanchiyoor Additional Chief Magistrate Court here on Thursday.
Earlier today, Ruwais was booked for abetment of suicide under the dowry prohibition act. He was quizzed and his arrest was also recorded. The person was produced before the court in the evening. The court now has remanded him in judicial custody till December 21.
Ruwais is being held responsible for the suicide of Shahna (28), an MBBS degree holder and a postgraduate student in the surgery department at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College.
Earlier Shahna’s mother and sister had issued statements against Ruwais. Shahna had been engaged to Ruwais, but the marriage hit a roadblock due to exorbitant dowry requests. The groom's family had demanded 150 sovereigns of gold, 15 acres of land, and a BMW car, which her family couldn't meet. Shahna who slipped into depression committed suicide, according to reports.
Shahna was found unconscious in her apartment at around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The police officials rushed her to the Medical College Hospital. However, she was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
