Strengthening of Mullaperiyar Dam: TN approaches SC seeking permission to fell trees

New Delhi: Tamil Nadu has approached the Supreme Court seeking permission to fell trees as part of strengthening Mullaperiyar baby dam. The administration has requested the Supreme Court to direct the Kerala government to issue permission to fell 15 trees.

Tamil Nadu has also requested the Supreme Court to direct Kerala to complete strengthening measures in a time bound manner.

In November 2021, Kerala had given permission to fell 15 trees, but it revoked the permission within six days in an arbitrary manner, pointed out Tamil Nadu in its request before the court .

TN wants to reinstate the permission. The other needs raised in the request are:

  • Permitting entry of more boats to Periyar lake
  • Complete road maintenance works in Vallakkadavu-Mullaperiyar Dam
