Kozhikode: The St. Theresa’s shrine in Mahe is one of the most visited shrines in India. It is said to be established in 1736 and has a rich history of over two centuries. The shrine is a symbol of communal harmony and embodies the spirit of ‘Mayyazhi Amma’ (mother of Mahe). The shrine under the Calicut Diocese has now been raised to the status of being North Kerala's first ever minor basilica by Pope Francis. Bishop Dr Varghese Chakkalakal termed the status elevation as the perfect ‘christmas gift’.    

The shrine with great spiritual, historical and architectural significance is now Malabar’s first ever basilica and the eleventh in the entire state. Basilicas are places of high religious significance and a ‘symbol’ of close ties with the Pope. The shrine attracts scores of believers and tourists throughout the year.
