Kannur: A special investigation team has been formed to probe the bomb blast in Panur in which a youth was killed on Friday. While speaking to Mathrubhumi on Saturday, Kannur City Police Commission Ajith Kumar has said that, Koothuparamba ACP KV Venugopal would lead the team.  

The bombs discovered from the accident spot have been successfully defused, he said. There are unconfirmed reports that, two persons have been taken into custody by the police in connection with the incident. The police suspects that, around 10 persons might have got involved in the bomb making process. Considering the tension prevailing in the region, the security arrangement has been beefed up and blast site is secured with more police force.  

According to local accounts, the deceased Sharil, and  severely injured Vineesh, shared a close friendship. Police investigations suggest that both individuals have affiliations with criminal gangs and are implicated in various criminal cases.

The discovery of bombs last year had prompted local residents to file complaints with the police, highlighting concerns about bomb-making activities in the area. Following Friday's explosion, authorities uncovered more bombs and the requisite materials for bomb production.

Reacting to the incident, KPCC President and UDF candidate for the Kannur Parliamentary Constituency, K Sudhakaran, said that, the incident confirms the role of CPM in spreading violence and unrest in the region. 

In response, the CPM's Panur Area Committee issued a statement refuting any involvement in the explosion. The party highlighted its commitment to maintaining peace and disowned any association with the deceased or injured individuals, who were reportedly ousted from the party due to their alleged involvement in several criminal activities.
