In a major development, a special intelligence unit established during the tenure of ADGP Ajith Kumar in the Law and Order department has been disbanded.
This unit, comprising 40 officers spread across 20 police districts, has now been reassigned to the main unit led by the newly appointed ADGP Manoj Abraham.
The restructuring comes against a backdrop of existing intelligence frameworks, including the State Special Branch and District Special Branch, prompting officials to conclude that a third distinct intelligence system was unnecessary.
Previously, district police chiefs were responsible for overseeing this special unit, which was directly managed by ADGP Ajith Kumar, who appointed the officers. Information flow from the district command centres to the ADGP’s office was conducted without prior approval from state police chief Sheikh Darvesh Saheb, leading to concerns about the operational integrity of this arrangement.
Sheikh Darvesh Saheb has reported these concerns to the government, raising questions regarding the execution of this special intelligence framework without adequate oversight.
