Moolamattom: A one-of-a-kind test vessel has started operation in Kulamavu reservoir, part of Idukki Dam. A state-of-the-art sonar system (that gathers data to analyze the sound waves of underwater objects) developed for the Indian Navy has been implemented here.

A smaller model of the large experimental vessel that can be lowered into the dam has been built for research purposes. A submersible platform for acoustic characterization and evaluation has been set up at the Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory, Kulamavu.

It will be used for the research of new sonar systems in naval ships, submarines, and helicopters. The parts of the experimental vessel were manufactured in different parts of the country. They were brought and assembled in Kulmavu. Officials said the platform will be used to test the rapid deployment and easy retrieval of sensors in the sonar system.

The test vessel is 60 meters long and 22 meters wide. The main equipment of the test vessel is a platform and a part that submerges in the water like a submarine. This platform is capable of submerging to a depth of 100 meters. 

A state-of-the-art premier testing and evaluation hub for sonar systems meant for the Indian Navy was inaugurated by DRDO chairman Samir V. Kamat on Wednesday, officials said.
