Thiruvananthapuram: The Southwest Monsoon is highly likely to hit Kerala by Thursday, June 4, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Alongside its arrival in Kerala, the monsoon is expected to advance further into more parts of the Southwest and Southeast Arabian Sea, certain areas of Lakshadweep and Tamil Nadu, as well as multiple regions of the Bay of Bengal (including the remaining parts of the Southeast Bay of Bengal, and parts of the Northeast, East-Central, West-Central, and Southwest Bay of Bengal).

A cyclonic circulation that previously persisted over the Southeast Arabian Sea near the southern Kerala coast has now shifted. It is currently positioned over the East-Central Arabian Sea and the adjoining Karnataka coast. In addition, another cyclonic circulation is active over the North Andaman Sea and its neighbouring regions.

Widespread heavy rainfall and thunderstorm warning

The IMD has predicted widespread rainfall across Kerala and Mahi from June 3 to June 7. Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected during this period. The Weather Department has also warned of thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 km/h.

Consequently, the IMD has issued orange and yellow alerts for various districts over the next five days.

An orange alert indicates a forecast for isolated very heavy rainfall, ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm within a 24-hour period.
