Pathanamthitta: Public outrage erupted against the police following an incident where a group of family members, including women, was attacked. As a result, SI Jinu has been transferred as part of disciplinary action. It was the squad, led by SI Jinu, that attacked the family, who were returning from a wedding function in Adoor. Pathanamthitta SP Vinod, explaining the actions taken in response to the incident, stated that the transfer was just the first step and that more stringent measures would be taken against the squad that assaulted innocent people.
Earlier, a case was registered against the police in connection with the incident, in which a family, including women, was beaten by the police without provocation in Pathanamthitta on Tuesday night. The case was filed based on a complaint by Sithara, one of the family members.
The police team had arrived at the scene near Kannankandy bar following a phone call from a bar staff member reporting that a group of men was causing trouble after the bar had closed. The group had demanded alcohol at an untimely hour, and when the bar employees refused to serve them, they refused to leave. The bar staff then called the police for assistance. Upon the police’s arrival, the individuals who had caused trouble fled the scene.
It is believed that the police, who were searching for those causing trouble in front of the bar, mistakenly attacked the family. The police team, led by SI S. Jinu, is accused of the assault. According to the intelligence department, there was a serious lapse on the part of the SI.
Meanwhile, the police have denied the accusation of lathi-charging the women, calling the complaint baseless. The group had stopped their vehicle by the roadside to rest after attending a wedding-related event. It is alleged that the police lathi-charged them without provocation. Some of the women sustained injuries to their heads and hands. The women, including those from Kottayam and Konni, sought treatment at the Pathanamthitta General Hospital. The group consisted of around 20 people, including women.
