Alappuzha: Sherin, who was first accused and convicted of orchestrating the murder of her father-in-law Bhaskara Karanavar in 2009, will eventually be released after serving 14 years in prison. The decision to reduce her sentence was made during a recent cabinet meeting.
The case, which shocked the Chengannur community, involved Sherin conspiring with three accomplices to kill Karanavar over disputes related to his will and alleged threats to her illegal dealings. Karanavar, a retired expatriate, was found dead in his home with chilli powder strewn across the crime scene to mislead investigators.
Police investigations revealed that Sherin had plotted the murder after Karanavar removed her as the nominee of a fixed deposit and decided to cancel his will, citing threats to his life. The crime, carried out by contract killers linked to Sherin, was uncovered through mobile records, eyewitness accounts, and forensic evidence.
Sherin, along with her accomplices, was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2010. Over the years, her appeals to the High Court and Supreme Court were rejected.
