Malappuram, Kerala: The police have arrested the husband of Shahana Mumtaz, who allegedly died by suicide in Kondotty, on Monday.

Abdul Wahid, a resident of Kizhisseri in Malappuram, was arrested at Kannur airport. He was later transferred to the Kondotty police station, where his arrest was officially recorded.

Shahana allegedly took her own life on January 14, 2025. In response to a complaint filed by her relatives, the police registered a case of unnatural death. Shahana's family has accused Abdul Wahid and his relatives of abusing her, allegedly over her skin colour. Later, the Kerala Women’s Commission registered a suo moto case.

Shahana, a first-year B.Sc. mathematics student, was the daughter of Parashiri Basheer and Shameena, hailing from Kondotty Block Road.

On the day of her passing, Shahana was working at home until 9:30 a.m. Later, her mother went to check on her and found the room locked from the inside. Upon looking through the window, she saw Shahana hanging inside. Family members and neighbors quickly broke down the door and rushed her to the hospital, but she was declared dead upon arrival.

Shahana married Abdul Wahid on May 27, 2024. After their marriage, Wahid went abroad. The family alleged that Shahana was frequently insulted by her husband and his family for her complexion and lack of English-speaking skills.
