New Delhi: The Supreme Court quashed Sreeram Venkitaraman’s plea against the Kerala High Court’s (HC) verdict in connection with the death of journalist K.M Basheer. The scribe was hit by a car driven by Venkitaraman in an inebriated state. The SC stated that whether or not the evidence is substantial will be examined during the trial.
The HC had earlier found Venkitaraman guilty for the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Venkitaraman approached the SC with an appeal questioning this order. The SC quashed the appeal saying that it is the trial court that will determine the validity of the evidence available.
Basheer lost his life in a car accident on August 3, 2019, at around 1 AM. The police case reads that Venkitaraman was overspeeding the car while inebriated. The accident took place in front of a public office near the Thiruvananthapuram Museum station.
