Strong evidence has emerged in the Sabarimala gold theft case showing a longstanding association between first accused Unnikrishnan Potti and former Tantri Kandararu Rajeevaru.

Pathanamthitta: In a major development in the Sabarimala gold theft case, strong evidence has emerged showing a long-standing association of over two decades between the first accused, Unnikrishnan Potti, and former Sabarimala tantri (chief priest) Kandararu Rajeevaru.
Although Potti has reportedly been present at Sannidhanam since the 2004 Mandalam season, he officially assumed the role of assisting Rajeevaru only during the festival season in March 2007. Photos published by 'Mathrubhumi' showed Potti positioned directly behind the Tantri, acting as a key assistant during major ceremonial rituals. This visual proof has been crucial to the special investigation team (SIT) probing the case.
While Rajeevaru had earlier stated that he shared only a casual acquaintance with Potti at Sabarimala, the emergence of these photographs contradicts earlier claims. This is reportedly the first time images have surfaced placing Potti in a prominent ceremonial role, significantly strengthening the probe.
Potti is believed to have arrived for the 2007 festival from his priestly posting at Srirampuram Ayyappa Temple in Bengaluru. Govardhan, an accused from Bellary who was arrested in connection with the gold theft, allegedly stated that upon reaching the shrine, Potti emerged from the Tantri’s room and assisted him.
It is suspected that Potti used his connection with the Tantri to gain influence over temple affairs. By 2018, he reportedly stepped back from priestly duties and transitioned into the role of a sponsor, allegedly becoming a person whose words carried considerable weight—so much so that even Tantri Rajeevaru would listen to him.
Last year, Potti was also reportedly seen playing a leading role in welcoming ministers and political leaders during the wedding of Rajeevaru’s son in Thiruvalla, reinforcing claims of his powerful inner-circle presence.
