Thiruvananthapuram: The family of the PG medico who committed suicide in Thiruvananthapuram has come up further details of Dr EA Ruwais who has been taken into police custody in connection with the incident.

Shahna’s brother Jasim Nas revealed that his sister was really fond of Ruwais. “We were even open to the idea of a register marriage. But Ruwais was money-minded. He wanted to extract a lump sum of money from us in the form of dowry as desired by his parents,” says Jasim.

“My sister slipped into depression as Ruwais backed out of the marriage citing dowry issues. They were in love with each other. But he failed to stand by my sister, eventually forcing her to commit suicide,” says Shahna’s brother.

“Ruwais’s father was adamant on procuring huge dowry through his son’s marriage. I had assured the family of the accused that I would pay them as much money as I could, but they were never ready for a compromise. All these developments mentally broke my sister,” says Jasim.

Ruwais is alleged to have had a relationship with another girl in the past. With the situation getting complicated, Jasim had asked his sister to give up on Ruwais, but she was persistent.

Shahna plunged into depression owing to the continuous setbacks in personal life. She was petrified by the fact that she would be forced to share the same workspace with Ruwais even after their marriage gets cancelled.

“It was Ruwais who came up with the proposal initially. People had a good opinion about him at his workplace. My sister thought he was a nice person and decided to live with him. I was always against the idea of sending my sister into a family that was longing for dowry. But I put my sister’s preference ahead of me,” Jasim concluded.

Officials are demanding a detailed investigation into the incident. There are unconfirmed reports that Ruwais had misbehaved with Shahna in front of other medico students in the past.

It is known that Ruwais had served as the president of the PG Medical Association (Thiruvananthapuram unit). Upon expressing his interest to marry Shana, her brother and mother had visited Ruwais’s house in the first week of November to discuss the alliance.
