New Delhi: Delhi Police has registered an FIR against Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for allegedly assaulting police personnel and obstructing government work during an INDIA bloc protest in the national capital, police sources said on Thursday.

Several Congress leaders and party workers who took part in Wednesday’s protest have also been named in the case. Police said they are examining the allegations and the role of those involved.

The FIR relates to incidents during the INDIA bloc’s protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Rahul Gandhi led the street protest before being detained along with several MPs. Police said 91 people, including multiple MPs and leaders, were detained during the demonstration.

The confrontation intensified after police stopped opposition leaders who were travelling by bus for a planned sit-in at Jantar Mantar following a lunch meeting at a South Indian restaurant on Janpath.

Priyanka Gandhi and other women opposition leaders sat on the road holding copies of the Constitution before they were forcibly removed and taken to police buses. Protesters raised slogans demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation.
