Kozhikode: To prevent vehicles from overspeeding on roads near schools in the district, District Collector Snehil Kumar Singh, who also serves as the Chairman of the Road Safety Council, has directed the agencies concerned  to install speed breakers.

As part of this initiative, the collector has instructed the agencies to prepare a list of roads near schools that currently lack speed breakers. The list must be handed over to the road authorities at the earliest.

During the Road Safety Council meeting held on Tuesday in the Collector’s chamber, the local governing bodies were also directed to remove hoardings and boards along roadsides that distract drivers or partially obstruct their view. The collector emphasised that necessary actions should be taken without delay.

The collector has further instructed the corporation officials to set up zebra crossing near the Mananchira Sports Council building. To ensure pedestrian safety, the council decided to retain the current system of restricting vehicle entry into SM Street.

The meeting also proposed the installation of smart traffic signal systems at the main junctions in Kozhikode city, as most existing traffic signals have become non-functional due to technical issues. Officials were directed to prepare and submit a proposal for this.

Kozhikode RTO Santhosh Kumar, Vadakara RTO E. Mohandas, DySP (DCRB) A. Abhilash, and officials from KSEB, PWD, the Water Authority, NHAI, and KSTP participated in the meeting.
