Thrissur: The investigation commission appointed by CPM had identified the fraud at the Karuvannur bank much before ED delved into the issue. The report submitted by leaders PK Biju and PK Shajan to the CPM Thrissur district committee contained vivid details on the benami transactions at the bank. Following this, district secretary MM Varghese issued a show-cause notice to the governing council of the bank on July 6, 2021.
The officials of the Department of Cooperation who had investigated the matter had also submitted a report citing the rampant benami transactions at the bank. The particular report was submitted on August 19, 2020. On page 34 of the report, it is stated that the loans availed by a person PP Kiran were all benami loans. Kiran was later arrested by the ED on charges of money laundering and is currently in jail. Another person named P Satheesh Kumar was arrested for his dealings with Kiran. In the remand report submitted by the enforcement directorate at the court, Satheesh Kumar is described as being the benami of a former MP and sitting MLA.
The enforcement directorate had refused to reveal the names of the above-mentioned MP and MLA. However, in connection with the Karuvannur bank scan, the ED carried out a raid at the residence of CPM state committee member/MLA AC Moideen. The veteran communist leader was quizzed at the Kochi ED office a couple of days ago as well. Meanwhile, former Congress MLA Anil Akkara had claimed CPM’s PK Biju as being the former MP involved in the Karuvannur fraud, in a press conference.
Thrissur corporation councillor Anoop Davis Kada, Wadakkanchery municipality health standing committee chairman PR Arivandakshan were also quizzed for their alleged involvement in the money laundering at the Karuvannur Bank. The questioning continued at the Kochi ED office even on Wednesday.
