The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a special bulletin warning that Kerala will get heavy rainfall for the next four days. The rainfall is caused by two low-pressure systems forming over the sea near India.

What is causing the heavy rain?

1. Depression over the Eastcentral Arabian Sea:

On October 25, a depression was observed near latitude 16.5°N and longitude 70.4°E. It stayed almost in the same place for three hours and is expected to move northwest over the next day.

2. Depression over the Southeast Bay of Bengal:

Another depression was observed near latitude 10.8°N and longitude 88.8°E. It is moving west at 7 kmph and is expected to become a deep depression by October 26. The IMD says it may turn into a cyclonic storm (montha) by the morning of October 27.

Rain forecast for Sunday, 26 October (today)

Most parts of Kerala will get rain or thundershowers today. Heavy rainfall of 7–11 cm in 24 hours is likely in one or two places.

Yellow warnings have been issued for Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. Coastal areas may see strong winds of 40–50 kmph, with gusts up to 60 kmph, until October 28. Thunderstorms with lightning are expected in some places.

Monday, 27 October:

Rain is likely in most places. Heavy to very heavy rainfall (12–20 cm) is expected in one or two locations. Orange warnings are in place for Kozhikode and Kannur. Yellow warnings continue for Alappuzha, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Wayanad, and Kasaragod.

Tuesday, 28 October:

Rain will continue across most places. Heavy rainfall (7–11 cm) is expected in one or two locations. Yellow warnings are active for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Idukki.

Wednesday, 29 October – Friday, 31 October:

Rain or thundershowers are likely in many parts of Kerala during this period.

The IMD has urged people to be careful. Strong rains and winds may cause damage to homes, roads, and other infrastructure. Authorities advise caution, especially in coastal areas.
