Thiruvananthapuram: It is learnt that no severe action will be taken against Pathanamthitta SP Sujith Das, who made comments about ADGP M.R. Ajith Kumar during a phone conversation with Nilambur MLA P.V. Anvar. Any action against the SP will be limited to a departmental inquiry, reports said.

Following the controversy that erupted after the conversation was leaked a few days back, intense discussions took place at police headquarters. It has not yet been decided whether Sujith Das, who is on a three-day leave, will be allowed to return to Pathanamthitta or transferred elsewhere.

According to reports a severe action such as suspension is not deemed necessary. Initially, ADGP M.R. Ajith Kumar demanded strict action against Sujith Das, but reports suggest he later withdrew this demand following discussions at police headquarters.

High drama

Sujith Das, who arrived in Thiruvananthapuram, attempted to meet Ajith Kumar but was not granted permission. The tussle within the police leadership has also posed difficulties for the government. This is the first time a district police chief has reacted in this manner against an ADGP responsible for law and order.

The preliminary assumption is that Sujith Das contacted MLA P.V. Anvar to convince him to withdraw a complaint about trees being cut down from the camp office when he was the Malappuram SP. Earlier, the MLA had demanded an inquiry into the tree-cutting incident. The leaked conversation suggests that Sujith Das made efforts to appease the MLA. The audio includes accusations against the ADGP, mentioning that M.R. Ajith Kumar is influential within the police force due to his loyalty to the Chief Minister’s political secretary, P. Sasi. The recording also mentions that Sujith Das, with 25 years of service, feels indebted to the MLA.
