Protesters blocking national highway

Malappuram: Many youth and student outfits held intense protests against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan who arrived to attend a debate at the University of Calicut here. The protest was organised under the leadership of MSF and Fraternity outfits over the backdoor appointment issue.

As the police blocked the protesters, the march ended up in clashes and the police resorted to lathi charge. The protesters blocked the national highway and the traffic towards Kozhikode and Malappuram districts was disrupted.

Heavy traffic block was experienced on NH-66 following protests and blockade. Clashes continue in front of the entrance of the University of Calicut. The protest started after the chief minister entered the campus.

Meanwhile, the event in which the chief minister is participating started at the seminar complex of the university as per schedule. Minister K T Jaleel and others also are attending the programme.
