New Delhi: Kannur University has decided to submit all documents related to the appointment of Priya Varghese as Associate Professor in the Malayalam Department to the Supreme Court. The documents, including the controversial interview list and research score, will be produced before the court.

A bench comprising Justice Manoj Misra and Justice Vijay Bishnoi is hearing the case.

Based on legal advice that withdrawing the affidavit previously submitted in support of Priya Varghese’s appointment could adversely affect the case, the university has decided not to withdraw it. Instead, it will seek to bring the alleged irregularities in the appointment to the court’s attention by directly producing all relevant documents.

According to the university’s scrutiny, Priya Varghese was ranked fifth on the basis of research scores. However, she moved to the first position in the final rank list after the interview.

The university’s scrutiny had found alleged irregularities in the appointment process. Senior advocate Nikhil Goel and advocate P.S. Sulfikar Ali will represent the university before the Supreme Court. The state government has also backed the university’s move.

Meanwhile, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has told the Supreme Court that Priya Varghese’s appointment should be invalidated. Additional Solicitor General K.M. Nataraj will represent the UGC before the court.
