Pathanapuram: A pregnant woman gave birth to one of her twin babies in an ambulance while on the way to hospital. The first baby was delivered en route, following which the mother, whose condition had deteriorated, was rushed to the hospital, where she gave birth to the second baby. The care and attention of the 108 ambulance staff proved crucial for the mother and her newborns.

The 33-year-old woman, who resides on rent at Manchalloor, Pathanapuram, gave birth to twin boys. When she began experiencing labour pain, her relatives sought help from the 108 ambulance service. The control room dispatched a message to the 108 ambulance stationed at Pathanapuram Community Health Centre. Driver Sijo Raj and Emergency Medical Technician Nitha Sreejith arrived and took the pregnant woman to the Punalur Taluk Hospital.

Upon reaching Piravanthur, the woman’s condition worsened. Nitha examined the woman and found that it would be unsafe for both the mother and baby to continue the journey without delivering. The team quickly prepared the necessary setup within the ambulance itself. The woman subsequently gave birth to the first baby inside the vehicle.

Nitha safely cut the umbilical cord and provided initial medical care to both mother and child. Sijo Raj then sped towards Punalur Taluk Hospital, where the woman delivered the second baby in the hospital. The mother and her twin babies were later transferred to SAT Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram for more care. Relatives reported that all three are in good health.
