Robert Francis Prevost elected as Pope Leo XIV, first U.S. pontiff with a global mission.

In a historic announcement on Thursday, the Vatican confirmed that Robert Francis Prevost has been elected as the first pope from the United States. Taking the papal name Leo XIV, he becomes the 267th pontiff of the Catholic Church.
Pope Leo XIV is recognised as a moderate figure and had close ties with Pope Francis. Prior to his papacy, he dedicated many years to missionary work in Peru, focusing on the global mission of the Catholic Church.
Visit to Kerala in 2004
In 2004, while serving as Prior General of the Order of St Augustine, Fr Robert Francis Prevost made a visit to Kerala. During his stay, he celebrated the Holy Eucharist at the Basilica of Our Lady of Varapuzha in the Archdiocese of Verapoly. His visit was noted for its simplicity, humility, and strong brotherhood, leaving a profound impact on the local clergy and the faithful.
