Kollam: Former MLA P Aisha Potty, who has been distancing herself from the CPM, is set to share stage with Congress leaders, fuelling strong speculation about her political realignment. Amid ongoing rumours of her joining the Congress, Aisha will participate in a memorial meeting for former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, organised by the Congress’s Kottarakkara Block Committee.

The event, to be held on Thursday at Kalayapuram Ashraya Sanketham, will be inaugurated by MP Kodikunnil Suresh, with Chandy Oommen MLA also expected to attend. Aisha Potty will deliver the memorial address. Speaking to Mathrubhumi, she said, "This is a programme attended by leaders from various political backgrounds. I have no connection with the party now. I am free to do what I wish."

Aisha has stayed away from CPM activities following disagreements with the party leadership. Though once a member of the district committee, she was excluded after skipping the district conference. She currently holds no active role within the CPM. Even as state treasurer of the All India Lawyers Union, she revealed she has been asked to relinquish her responsibilities.

Efforts by the Congress to induct her began earlier this year. The speculation intensified when a political resolution at the Congress's Kottarakkara Municipal Workers’ Camp openly praised her, stating that the party doors were open. There were even reports that she might be considered as the UDF candidate for Kottarakkara in the upcoming elections.

Aisha Potty first made headlines by defeating R Balakrishna Pillai in Kottarakkara, a constituency he had long represented. She went on to serve three consecutive terms as MLA from the region.

Her presence at a major Congress event has once again sparked talk of a political shift, possibly signalling her formal entry into the party.
