Malappuram: Malappuram Police Chief R. Viswanadh said that a police commando Vineeth’s alleged suicide at the Special Operations Police Camp in Areekode is believed to have been caused by frustration over failing a physical fitness test.
Vineeth (36), a native of Vythiri in Wayanad and a Special Operations Group (SOG) commando, died by suicide after shooting himself in the head.
Vineeth, who joined the force in 2011, had participated in several operations during his tenure. Members of the force undergo periodic refresher courses, and as part of their duties, they must pass a physical fitness test requiring a 5 km run within 25 minutes. Vineeth failed the test by just 30 seconds. Around ten officers, including Vineeth, reportedly failed the same fitness test.
Addressing the media in Areekode, the SP said that mental stress from failing the test might have driven Vineeth to take this extreme step. The SP also said that Kondotty DySP Sethu KC has been assigned to conduct a detailed investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, reports have emerged alleging harassment by superiors at the camp. However, the SP said there is no prima facie evidence to support these claims. Vineeth had been granted leave from November 9 to 11, and no record exists of any pending leave request for December.
The investigation will also examine a WhatsApp message Vineeth sent to a friend, where indications were made against his superior officer, AC Ajith. Vineeth’s phone will be thoroughly examined as part of the inquiry.
