Thrissur: For the first time in history, the Thrissur Pooram fireworks were held in broad daylight. Previously, the fireworks were disrupted only on those occasions, when the weather conditions were unfavourable.
But this year was an exception. It is widely being alleged that the unwanted interferences of the Police caused the delay in fireworks.
The members of the Thiruvambady Devaswom got into an argument with the cops as they imposed several restrictions in the Swaraj Round prior to the fireworks. Following this, the Devaswom official called off the Pooram proceedings. The customary practices were held in a low-key manner at the Thiruvambady temple in the presence of only a single elephant. The fireworks which were scheduled at 3 AM eventually happened at 7 AM, much to the disappointment of the Pooram attendees.
The Police are accused of unleashing unfriendly behaviour towards the public. There wasn't any coordination among the cops whatsoever, neither was there any clarity regarding the passes issued by them. Obviously, these reasons were more than enough for the cops and the Pooram organisers to lock horns.
The excessive Police interference reportedly created ruckus during the early morning rituals at the Thirivambady temple. The tensions escalated during the time of the elephant procession. Similar incidents were reported at the Paramekkavu temple as well. The police erected rope barricades all of a sudden on the Pooram premises angering the Pooram organisers.
