Abdul Gafoor and Iyyathukutty with the fish

Vazhakkad (Malappuram): Mapram native Abdul Gafoor and his mother Iyyathukutty donated Rs 15,000 to the public fund for the treatment of Cholakkal KP Rasheed who is suffering from kidney disease. How they found the amount is the most interesting part - they auctioned a fish!

On Sunday morning, Gafoor was sitting in a tea shop in Mapram after setting the fishing nets in Chaliyar river. His friends asked him whether he would contribute something to the medical aid fund if he gets a good fish.

Gafoor was helpless and asked his mother what to do. His mother told him to pray well so that they would get a good fish and can contribute to the treatment fund.

After a long wait, a giant fish was caught in his net by 12 noon. The fish belonging to Catla (Asian carp) variety weighed about 12.5 kilogram. He immediately informed the committee members and they put the fish up for an auction in Vazhakkad Cheeni Bazar town. Bidding started with Rs 3000.

After seeing the social media post, Abdu Salam, an expat in Qatar and a native of Vazhakkad, bid for Rs 10,000. Since it is for a philanthropic cause, he gave back half of the fish for the auction. TK Ubaidulla, a construction engineer in Vazhakkad bid it for Rs 5,000. The donation committee members were happy that they could sell the fish for Rs 15000.
