Payyanur: Train passengers on the Mangaluru–Goa Vande Bharat Express will soon be able to shop during their journey, with products delivered directly to their seats.

The Railway's pilot initiative will allow authorised sales representatives of various companies to sell products onboard. The representatives, wearing uniforms and carrying identity cards, will move through the train without disrupting passengers. Purchases can be made using debit or credit cards, eliminating the need for cash.

The onboard retail service will begin on July 28 on the Mangaluru–Goa Vande Bharat, said entrepreneur Harikrishnan of Payyanur, who is implementing the initiative. Products on offer will include books, toys, garlands, earrings and other jewellery, perfumes, and stationery items.

The concept was first introduced by the Railways on 16 Mumbai-based trains. Following its success, the Western Railway decided to expand the programme to other railway zones. The initiative aims to bring leading FMCG (Fast-Moving Consumer Goods) brands directly to passengers during their journey.

Apart from everyday consumer goods, passengers will also be able to buy beauty products, kitchen accessories, fitness equipment and other items. The Railways also sees huge potential for marketing regional handicrafts and locally made products from states such as Kerala and Goa through this onboard retail model.
