Palarivattom flyover demolition from Monday
Kochi: The Palarivattom flyover slated for reconstruction will be demolished from Monday. Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society Ltd and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, which is entrusted with the reconstruction, have decided, in a meeting convened on Saturday, to demolish the flyover in phases.
All precautions to avoid any traffic congestion due to the works will be taken. For this, the works will be carried out in predetermined time schedule. Also, the demolition works will be carried out day and night.
DMRC has informed that the flyover will be reconstructed within 8 months under the supervision of E Sreedharan. The piers and pier caps of the flyover will be reconstructed.
The Supreme Court had permitted a new bridge in place of the defunct one recently.
The flyover was constructed during the tenure of the previous United Democratic Front government. A few months into opening the bridge for traffic, cracks were spotted. The structural integrity of the bridge was doubted. Following this the state government had moved Kerala High Court. However, it had issued an order directing to conduct a load test before demolishing the flyover. The government then moved an appeal before SC against this order.
