Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Electricity Minister Sunny Joseph on Friday assured football fans that there would be no power disruptions during the FIFA World Cup final on Sunday, and said the state would purchase additional electricity if required to ensure uninterrupted supply.

The minister's assurance came amid public concern over power outages ahead of the Argentina-England semifinal and following an attack on a Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) office in Thrissur district.

"We will ensure uninterrupted power supply during the World Cup final. If necessary, Kerala will purchase additional electricity," Sunny Joseph said.

The statement came a day after five people were arrested for allegedly vandalising a KSEB office and assaulting an employee at Annamanada near Mala.

According to police, the incident occurred around midnight when electricity supply in the area was disconnected as part of a scheduled half-hour night-time power cut imposed due to an electricity shortage linked to low rainfall.

A group of people reportedly reached the KSEB office, alleging that the power had been cut ahead of the World Cup semifinal between Argentina and England, and questioned the employee on duty.

Police said the accused allegedly assaulted the employee and damaged office property, causing losses estimated at around Rs 10,000.

The five suspects have been arrested, and a case has been registered for assault and vandalism.
