Thiruvananthapuram: The name of Tomin J Thachankary has been dropped from the list to appoint the new Kerala police chief. Vigilance director S Sudesh Kumar, Road Safety commissioner Anil Kanth and Fire Force chief Dr B Sandhya figure in the final list, according to reports.
The final list was prepared by the UPSC at the meeting held in New Delhi on Thursday. The new DGP in charge of law and order will be appointed from the final list of 3 to be given by UPSC to the state government. Dr B Sandhya is likely to become the new Kerala police chief, it is learnt.
The state government handed over the list of 9 persons who have 30 years of service to UPSC. The most senior among them is Arun Kumar Sinha who is head of Special Protection Group. But he did not show interest to return to Kerala. From the remaining list, Thachankary was avoided and the list of 3 persons was finalised.
Before the list was submitted to the centre, allegations and counter allegations arose. Complaints were lodged with the UPSC itself against the head of Human Rights Commission Tomin Thachankary on the vigilance cases filed against him.
UPSC had received complaints against most of the persons who figured in the shortlist, said senior police officials.
The state police chief will be appointed from the list prepared by the UPSC as per the 2018 Supreme Court verdict. This is the first time that the police chief is being selected from the list recommended by the UPSC committee.
