The critical selection process unfolded at the Sopanam immediately following the Usha Pooja.

The Sabarimala temple opened its sanctum sanctorum for the auspicious Thulam month rituals. In the highly anticipated selection of the Melsanthies (chief priests) for both the Sabarimala and Malikappuram shrines, Areekara Subramanyan Sankaran Namboothiri and Ayadath Illam A. Damodaran Namboothiri, were elected as the chief priests of the respective shrines. The critical selection process unfolded at the Sopanam immediately following the Usha Pooja. Conducted under the strict oversight of Sabarimala Special Commissioner R. Jayakrishnan and Devaswom Commissioner B. Sunilkumar, the appointment was executed through a traditional draw of lots. Royal children from the Pandalam Palace were entrusted with picking the lucky tokens.
This year's pilgrimage period carries exceptional religious importance, as it is marked by the temple opening during Mahanavami and Vijayadashami—a rare convergence occurring after several decades. High-profile officials, dignitaries, and thousands of steadfast devotees braved torrential downpours at the Sannidhanam to mark the momentous occasion. Following the completion of the Thulam month ceremonies, the hill shrine is scheduled to close on October 22.
