Kochi: Minister of State George Kurian has said that Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has assured him that steps will be initiated soon for the construction of the much-anticipated Nedumbassery Airport Railway Station near Kochi.

According to Kurian, the Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying and Minority Affairs, Vaishnaw gave this assurance during recent discussions regarding infrastructure upgrades in Kerala. The proposed station has long been a demand of air travellers using the Cochin International Airport and is expected to notably improve multimodal connectivity in the region.

Kurian recalled that during a window-trailing railway inspection conducted last year, Ashwini Vaishnaw had personally identified the location for the station and briefed officials about its feasibility. Kurian had also accompanied the minister during that site visit.

In addition to the station project, the Railway Minister informed that additional coaches will be added to MEMU trains from November to reduce the burden on regular passengers, Kurian added.

Vaishnaw also reportedly assured that requests to add stoppages at certain stations will be considered sympathetically, keeping in mind the convenience of passengers, Kurian further said.

The proposed Nedumbassery Airport Railway Station is expected to enhance last-mile connectivity for airport users and ease congestion at neighbouring railway stations.
