Thiruvananthapuram: The ‘MLA’ designation attached to the driving licence of former Transport Minister KB Ganesh Kumar, who lost in the Assembly elections, will be removed. Authorities said the name on a driving licence must match the name used in a person’s official identity documents, and a discrepancy has been found in this case. The Motor Vehicles Department has initiated steps to remove the ‘MLA’ suffix.

Temporary designations are generally not added to official documents, including driving licences. Ganesh Kumar’s licence is valid until July 10, 2028, but the term of the Assembly to which he belonged has already ended.

Officials said the ‘MLA’ title was added to the licence before the introduction of the ‘Sarathi’ software system in 2019. The department may seek an explanation from Ganesh Kumar regarding the matter.

It has also been found that Ganesh Kumar obtained his driving licence before attaining the age of 18. Rules state that a licence must be cancelled if irregularities are detected. The Motor Vehicles Department will seek legal advice before taking further action.
