
Kozhikode: In a major blow for Kerala Government, Electricity Minister K. Krishnankutty has come forward stating that the contract for the Maniyar Hydroelectric Project, which has expired, should not be extended.
His remark came amid reports that Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the Industries Department are in favour of extending the contract with the private firm Carborundum Universal.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Krishnannkutty emphasized that the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) KSEB had already submitted a report earlier advocating for the takeover of the project. KSEB is against extending the contract as it claims it would only
Meanwhile, the Industrial Department has requested an extension of the contract, citing the need to promote the industry. A final decision on the contract extension has not been made yet. The Chief Minister will make the final call on the matter. The Minister also expressed hope that no further electricity rate hikes would be required.
