Kozhikode: Renowned historian and scholar Dr M.G.S. Narayanan, celebrated for his fearless commitment to historical truth and cultural preservation, passed away on Saturday. He was 92.

Widely respected in academic and public spheres, MGS was known not only for his formidable scholarship but also for his unflinching integrity in the face of political and intellectual pressures. His contributions to South Indian historiography, particularly through his studies on the Chera dynasty and medieval Kerala, have long been considered seminal.

Last year, during a community felicitation in Kozhikode, MGS was showered with affection and gratitude by admirers from across society. Kozhikode Mayor Dr M. Beena Philip, had paid a heartfelt tribute, stating, "At a time when history is being distorted, M.G.S.'s courage to stand by the truth is his most remarkable trait."

Dr Narayanan’s enduring commitment to historical accuracy often placed him at odds with prevailing narratives, but he remained undeterred. According to archaeologist Dr K.K. Muhammed, his candour in critiquing people and systems without bias distinguished him as one of India’s rarest historians. “Many positions he deserved eluded him,” Dr Muhammed noted. Writer Hameed Chennamangaloor went further, stating that Narayanan’s steadfastness earned him the title ‘M.G.S. the Great’.

The absence of a Padma award in recognition of his life’s work was described by writer U.K. Kumaran as a glaring injustice.

Responding to the tributes, he simply said, “Such kind words bring great joy.”

During the event he was also honoured with the release of "Marichu Mama Baalyam", a collection of poems he had penned during his student days.

Dr M.G.S. Narayanan's legacy transcends the boundaries of academia. He was a public intellectual, a fearless critic, and a custodian of Kerala’s past. In an era where the rewriting of history has become a political tool, his life serves as a reminder that scholarship, when grounded in truth, can be an act of resistance.

He is survived by his family, students, and countless admirers who will continue to cherish his work and values.
