Akhil Sivanand and Muhammed Sabith UMM of 'Mathrubhumi.com' win Ramnath Goenka Award 2026 for their Wayanad landslide reportage series.

New Delhi: Senior content writers of 'Mathrubhumi'Akhil Sivanand and Muhammed Sabith UM have been honoured with the 20th Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Award. The awards were presented by Vice President C P Radhakrishnan at a ceremony held in New Delhi.
Akhil Sivanand is a senior content writer and Muhammed Sabith serves as a content writer at 'Mathrubhumi.com'. Both were recognised for their reportage series “Venam Uruledutha Manassukalkkum Thaang”, published on 'Mathrubhumi.com', which highlighted the urgent need for rehabilitation and mental health support for communities affected by landslides in the Chooralmala-Mundakkai regions of Wayanad.
The same series also received a Jury Special Mention in the Social Impact category from the Asian College of Journalism (ACJ), underscoring its significant contribution to raising awareness of disaster recovery and psychological care.
Akhil Sivanand hails from Kottayam, son of K S Sivanandan and Susheela. His wife, Jayalakshmi K R, works as a clerk at Thodupuzha Urban Co-operative Bank, and the couple has a son, Ayaan Akhil.
Muhammed Sabith UM comes from Kasargod, Mugu, and is the son of Abdul Rahman and Beefathima. He has previously received the K A Francis Award and the Indian Institute of Mass Communication Award, reflecting his consistent excellence in journalism.
