As the prison sentence is limited to one year, Mani C. Kappen's position as an MLA is not currently under threat

Mumbai: Pala MLA Mani C. Kappan has been sentenced to one year in prison in a cheque bounce case. The Borivali Magistrate Court in Mumbai has also ordered him to pay Rs 5.30 crore in compensation, along with interest.
The court's order follows a complaint filed by Dinesh Menon, a Non-Resident Keralite and businessman.
According to the order, the amount must be paid within one month. Failure to pay within the stipulated period will result in an additional three months of imprisonment.
As the prison sentence is limited to one year, Mani C. Kappan's position as an MLA is not currently under threat.
Reacting to the verdict, Kappen said he had done nothing wrong and would legally challenge the case.
