Thiruvananthapuram: In an unusual step, Kerala Police registered a case after the mike howled during Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's speech at the condolence meeting for Oommen Chandy on Monday.

The Cantonment police have registered a suo moto case following the incident. The mike malfunctioned seconds after Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan started his speech at the event organised by Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee  (KPCC) at Mahatma Ayyankali Hall in Thiruvananthapuram.

However, the officials have not implicated anyone in the incident and only seized the mike and the amplifier.

Station House Officer Shafi said that a case had been booked to investigate the reason for the mike howl. However, no formal complaint has been received in the incident.

Meanwhile, mic owner Renjith has come forward with a statement in the case. He said that when the chief minister came to speak, photographers and other media members rushed forward. One of their bags accidentally hit the amplifier, causing the disturbance. When speaking to Mathrubhumi News, Renjith said that he was shocked to learn that a case had been registered in his name for this.

“The console was set near the stairs. When the CM got on the stage, it became crowded with mediapersons. They stamped on the wires and one of their bags fell on the console, increasing the volume to its full level. The technician was unable to get through the crowd and access the console. But he managed to reach there within 10 seconds and fixed the problem. This is a common occurrence at events like this.” Renjith said.

“Cantonment CI called me and asked for an explanation for what happened. I clarified everything. They asked me to present the mic and amplifier to the station. They said it would be returned after an expert examination. Police feel that this may have been intentional. Neither the organizers nor any party members complained about this after the event”, Renjith added.
