Kottayam: Hundreds of boats are lined up in the fields of Malarikkal, waiting to take visitors close to the spectacular bloom of water lilies that transforms the region every year into a vibrant natural wonder.

Currently, more than a hundred boats, ranging from two- seven seater boats, are ready for service. These boats can be seen lined up along the stretch starting from the Kiliroor Bridge as one heads towards Malarikkal.

This unique boating experience allows visitors to travel deep into the paddy fields to witness the stunning pink and white blooms up close. The main bloom occurs in two major paddy clusters: the J Block 9000, which covers about 1,800 acres in the Malarikkal region, and the Thiruvaikari paddy field, which spans 820 acres.

Along both sides of the J Block 9000, for nearly one and a half kilometres, the road is flanked by the flowering fields. However, this stretch has not fully bloomed yet. Instead, the best views are currently found near the backwaters opposite this stretch. Tourists can travel a bit further down the road, board a boat, and head westwards to reach the Thiruvaikari fields, spread across 650 acres, where the bloom is at its peak.

A boat ride to reach the heart of the bloom takes nearly 45 minutes. Visitors must time their trips wisely, as the flowers begin to wilt after 10 am. Unaware of this, many tourists reach the site too late and end up boating around the area only to find the blooms fading.

Boat operators charge around ₹1,000 for a ride in a small boat, with the typical fare being ₹200 per person. As most boats require a minimum of five passengers to operate, this ensures a reasonable earning for the boat owners.

Suresh Vazhavelil, a local boat owner says that,“the number of boats has doubled this season when compared to last year. Many boat owners have invested nearly a lakh, including engine cost, to purchase new boats to meet the demand.”

If you’re planning a visit, make sure to arrive early in the morning to catch the water lilies in full bloom and enjoy an unforgettable boat ride through Kerala’s magical paddy fields.
