Kozhikode: The funeral of renowned playback singer Machattu Vasanthi was held at the Manari Crematorium in Kozhikode. Her son Muralidharan performed the last rites. She was 81.

Vasanthi passed away while undergoing treatment at Kozhikode Medical College on Sunday night. Her body was placed for public viewing at her residence in Feroke and later at Town Hall, Kozhikode.

A large number of people from the world of art and culture gathered at Town Hall to honour the beloved singer. Among those who came to pay homage were Mathrubhumi Chairman and Managing Editor P. V. Chandran, MP M. K. Raghavan, Kozhikode Mayor Beena Philip and CPM District Secretary P. Mohanan.

Machattu Vasanthi first gained widespread recognition at the age of 13, thanks to her rendition of the popular song "Pachappanamthathe.." The celebrated music director Baburaj played a crucial role in introducing her to the Malayalam film industry.

Vasanthi was the daughter of revolutionary singer and radio artist Machattu Krishnan. Her notable contributions to Malayalam cinema include the tracks "Thathammey Thathammey nee paadiyal athippazham thanidum…" and "Aaru chollidum aaru chollidum…" from Ramu Kariat's film "Minnaminungu," with music composed by Baburaj.

Her passing marks the end of an era in the Malayalam music industry, leaving behind a rich cultural legacy. Her songs and performances will continue to be remembered and cherished by generations.
