Malappuram: A lorry driver lost his life as a goods lorry careened off the NH-66 and fell into a depth of 30 feet at the accident-prone Vattappara curve.

The accident happened around 4:30 AM in the morning. The goods lorry was carrying loads from Kozhikode to Thrissur.

The deceased driver was identified as Gopal Jadhav, a native of Karnataka. The Fire Force had to arrive at the spot to pull out the driver from the jammed vehicle. The helper of the lorry was shifted to a nearby hospital. His condition is said to be stable.

Accidents have become a regular incident at the fatal curve on the National Highway-66, located in Malappuram. In the month of March, earlier this year, three persons had lost their lives in a similar manner, as the lorry fell off the curve into the gorge.

The persisting problem is expected to be solved with the renovation of the highway. An alternative road being constructed in the area, on the stretch between Kuttippuram-Valanchery, will help people avoid travelling on the Vattappara stretch.
